When was your cambelt last replaced?
Having an answer to that question can be the difference between happy motoring or a costly & labour intensive repair bill.
This belt should be replaced every 5 years or 100,000 kms – whichever comes first.
Even if you’ve only driven 60,000km your warranty company won’t cover you if the belt is more than 5 years old, so don’t neglect it just because you haven’t been driving far!
The simple way of explaining the importance of a cambelt is to imagine that you are riding a push bike. The chain breaks or comes off, the bike stops! This is exactly what’s happens when a cambelt snaps, except it’s far easier to fix a bike chain.
The expense lies not in the cost of the belt, but the effect on the engine when the belt goes.
The cambelt keeps the engine in time so the valves don’t hit the pistons. When it breaks it throws the sequence out and the valves hit the pistons, bending the valves. The valve replacement can cost anywhere upwards of $1,500.
When buying a second hand car, check the mileage on the cambelt based on the service record, in addition to the year it was replaced. If it can’t be verified, you may be best to walk away. This is one of the most important elements in any vehicle pre-purchase inspection, make sure you know the condition of your new vehicle’s cambelt!
Some engine designs are more prone to damage than others – ask your mechanic if you’re concerned about yours.
TIP: Some vehicles (such as certain makes of Hondas) also possess a balance belt in addition to the Cambelt. Both should be regularly replaced to protect your vehicle from a costly repair bill.
In some engines there are 2 belts, a cambelt and timing belt or a balance belt.
